Green Schools
St. Matthew’s School is part of the International Green Flag Award Programme.
Green-Schools is Ireland’s leading environmental management and education programme for schools.
With six flags already behind us, our very enthusiastic Green Schools Committee is now leading the school towards the Global Citizenship- Energy Flag.
This is a maintenance theme which gives us an opportunity to revise the Energy theme while looking at issues surrounding Energy on a Global scale.
Each flag application runs over two school years, and we are currently working on the 7th Green Schools flag, 'Global Citizenship – Energy’. Application will be submitted at the end of March 2023.
The most obvious global link to the energy theme is of course Climate Change, the most serious environmental problem of our time – and intrinsically linked to our energy use.
As Global Citizenship is such a broad theme, it is spread over three flags (this will be our second such) and is linked to all the previous themes we have worked on. After the Energy theme, Marine Environment will be next in the Global Citizenship programme.
Our committee comprises of students from 3rd to 6th classes, with co-ordinators Bernardine and Ms. Glynn.
